OUT for Safe Schools® is a national initiative that helps educators, administrators, and DOE employees "come out" as visible allies for LGBTQ+ students.

There are a few ways to bring the OUT for Safe Schools® badge program to your school community. One way is to designate 1-2 people to attend the Build an Affirming Community with OUT for Safe Schools® webinar, then turn-key the information to your school staff. Another way is to encourage your school staff to attend the Build an Affirming Community with OUT for Safe Schools® webinar as a staff development opportunity. All trained participants are eligible to order OUT for Safe Schools® badges for themselves and school staff. Only adults are allowed to wear the badge. Wearing the badge means that one pledges to:

  • Be open and listen
  • Practice inclusive language and avoid making assumptions about a student's gender identity or sexual orientation
  • Intervene when you hear an anti-LGBTQ+ comment
  • Refer to resources, as needed
