CHAMPS Sports and Fitness Program is inclusive and engages elementary and middle school students, regardless of athletic or physical ability, in activities that help them stay active before and after-school. Principals can select one program activity per season in the CHAMPS Manager App during the "one-time" application period. The Office of School Wellness Programs (OSWP) does not provide sporting equipment or coordinates interscholastic sporting events.  


The principal will consider the following criteria when selecting an activity for their school community: 

  • student-population is highly interested in the sport or fitness activity
  • teacher-coach nominated has extensive experience or expertise in the chosen sport or fitness activity
  • activity space or gymnasium is appropriate for students to practice and play safely
  • equipment is already available at the school and suitable for all student participants to use during practice sessions to apply skills learned

Active Kids (formerly BOKS) (Grades K-5)


ElementaryActive Kids is designed to support elementary and middle school students physical, mental and social development through movement. The teacher will implement the Active Kids Lesson Plans at a Distance (grades K-5) which includes 12 modified, easy-to-follow lesson plans to get students physically active while maintaining health and safety guidelines.

Active Kids Bootcamp (formerly BOKS) (Grades 6-8)


MiddleActive Kids is designed to support children physically, mentally and socially through movement. The teacher will implement the Active Kids Bootcamp lessons which includes 10 weeks of resources for a boot-camp style fitness program that is equipment-free and suitable for students of all fitness levels.

Badminton

Middle 

Badminton program is a racket sport and considered a low-intensity activity. The teacher will teach the basic fundamental badminton skills to help build confidence. hand-eye coordination, speed, agility and endurance. 

Baseball

Middle 

Baseball program offers students of different athletic abilities the opportunity to learn, practice and apply the fundamental skills, such as, throwing, catching, batting, etc. Baseball offers great aerobic and endurance benefits. Teachers will focus on teaching students the rules, skills, and strategies that make up America’s game.

Basketball

All Grades

Basketball program will concentrate on skill development, knowledge of the game, and fitness. The basketball developmental program uses a building-blocks approach to ensure skill competency and progression.

BowlingAll GradesBowling program is adaptable and children of every ability level can participate. Bowling integrates balance, coordination and motor skills. Bowling can be implemented right on your school campus, and no specific bowling shoes or facilities are required.

Cheerleading

Middle 

Cheerleading program is a demanding sport that uses organized routines of one-to-three minutes made from elements of tumbling, dance, jumps, cheers, and stunts. CHAMPS offers Cheerleading programs to student-athletes of all skill levels. 

Cricket

Middle 

The CHAMPS Cricket Program concentrates on developing the basic skills and knowledge of the game and incorporating a fitness-based component to encourage lifelong health and well-being. 

Cycling

Middle 

CHAMPS Cycling gives students the opportunity to learn life-long cycling skills while enjoying a low-impact workout. 

Dance

All Grades

Dancing is an excellent way of keeping students active and healthy through movement. CHAMPS dance programs have evolved beyond commonly taught dance to a variety of genres including tap, jazz, modern, ballet, African, classical Indian, hip hop, step, Latin and Caribbean. 

Double Dutch

All Grades

Double Dutch is open to student-athletes of all skill levels. The program teaches students the basics of double-dutch while enhancing their skill development. Programs incorporate teaching and assessment of skill development in the following areas: speed, compulsory, steps, freestyle and fusion.

European Team Handball

Middle 

Team Handball, also know as European Team Handball is fast paced and team oriented. Handball is a sport that help students develop strength, speed and fitness ability. A variation of soccer, Handball is composed of two teams of seven players and one goal-keeper each. The objective is to throw the ball into the opponent’s goal as many times as possible within two 30-minute periods of play.

Fencing

Middle 

Fencing develops the reflexes of a boxer, the legs of a high-jumper, and the concentration of a tournament chess player.  A good fencer trains their body and mind to be focused, fast and efficient. Every movement is at once powerful and economical, decisive and unbelievably swift.

Field Hockey

Middle 

As an invasion game, student-athletes in field hockey learn the foundational motor skills, movement patterns, as well as basic strategies and tactics of the game.  

Fit 5 by Special Olympics

All Grades

A flexible fitness resource designed to support students with disabilities. Includes fitness cards and videos and a support guide with resources to encourage daily exercise, healthy eating, and the importance of staying hydrated. 

Fitness Club

All Grades

CHAMPS Fitness Clubs provide schools the opportunity to engage students in an array of physical activities that promote fitness, social responsibility and personal wellness. 

Flag Football

All Grades

Flag Football program focuses on teaching rules, strategies and tactics through the development of basic skills, teamwork and overall physical fitness. 

Flag Rugby

All Grades

Rugby is a popular sport suitable for all ages and abilities that promotes fitness and strength. Currently, CHAMPS middle schools practice a version of the game called Rugby Sevens, which includes a roster of 12 players, with seven players rotating on the field from each team.  Using this version of the game allows for more student-athletes to actively participate in game-play.  

Floor Hockey

Middle 

Floor Hockey programs emphasize learning the rules of the game while learning the different strategies and tactics of the sport.  Through participation, students-athletes develop their physical fitness and practice their team building skills.  

Golf

Middle 

Golf offers excellent health and mental benefits to students. Because golf requires extreme patience and precision, golfers tend to develop deeper focus and concentration. The walking and movements associated with golf also gives the body a low-impact cardiovascular and toning workout. 

Gymnastics

All Grades

Gymnastics helps students learn diligence and tenacity, while learning how to move and control their bodies. The CHAMPS Gymnastics programs help students develop self-confidence, teamwork, patience, perseverance and dedication, while nurturing a love for physical activity.  

Handball

Middle 

One-wall handball is truly a New York City activity. CHAMPS one-wall handball program embraces the basic skills with a focus on participation and the development of fitness.

Lacrosse

Middle 

CHAMPS Lacrosse programs provide the opportunity for students to learn this games rules, skills needed and strategies. Lacrosse promotes fitness, social responsibility, and increases personal wellness. 

Martial Arts (Non-contact)

All Grades

Non-contact Martial Arts has many styles and forms. This unique program can help students learn self-esteem, patience, and focus. One of the most commonly taught is Capoeira from Brazil that can be performed in dance-like movements incorporating music. The CHAMPS Martial Arts program will help students develop mental acuity to the fullest, thereby achieving harmony of mind, body and spirit.

Netball

Middle 

Games are played on a rectangular court with raised goal rings at each end. Each team attempts to score goals by passing a ball down the court and shooting it through its goal ring. Players are assigned specific positions, which define their roles within the team and restrict their movement to certain areas of the court. During general play, a player with the ball can hold on to it for only three seconds before shooting for a goal or passing to another player. The winning team is the one that scores the most goals. Netball games are 60 minutes long.

Running Program

All Grades

The Running Program by New York Road Runners includes a series of sample lessons to teach and develop the basic, fundamental skills of running, including proper form, balance, pacing, speed, and strength.

Soccer

All Grades

CHAMPS soccer programs emphasize a building-blocks approach in skills development with an equal focus on fun and fitness. 

Softball

Middle 

The CHAMPS softball programs provide the opportunity for students of different athletic abilities to engage in an activity that offers great aerobic and endurance benefits. CHAMPS softball focuses on teaching students the rules, skills, and strategies that make up America’s game. 

Step

All Grades

CHAMPS Step clubs provide students of all skill levels with the opportunity to express themselves through Stepping. Stepping is a form of dance where steppers use their bodies as instruments to produce rhythms and sounds through footsteps, hand claps, and the spoken word. Step teams synchronize these stomps, claps and chants to get a great aerobic workout while practicing choreographed routines.

Swimming

All Grades

Swimming is a lifetime activity that requires coordination, strength, and cardiovascular endurance.  CHAMPS Swim Programs help participating students learn water safety strategies while having fun with their peers.  Swimming programs require additional requirements and certifications. Schools that select this as an option will be contacted for further information and next steps.  

Table Tennis

Middle 

Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small rackets. The game takes place on a hard table divided by a net.

Tai Chi

All Grades

With its Chinese origins in promoting personal wellness and tranquility in its surrounding environment, Tai Chi offers students the skills practiced over centuries. In Tai Chi, a series of slow movements that incorporate the entire body flow together into a continuous sequence. Tai Chi enhances balance, coordination, muscular strength, proper posture, focused attention and grace.

Tennis

All Grades

Tennis is a racket sport that can be played individually or in teams.  CHAMPS tennis programs emphasize stroke development and court movement, while creating a safe and fun environment to play.  

Volleyball

All Grades

CHAMPS offers volleyball programs to youngsters playing at different skill levels from beginner to advance. Volleyball has close ties to other national pastimes like tennis and handball. Some of the social benefits of volleyball are cooperative learning and teamwork. The physical intensity of this sport nurtures students’ discipline and hard work.

Yoga

All Grades

CHAMPS Yoga allows students to learn basic yoga postures and progress into more challenging movements.  Using the breath as a guide, individual poses link together creating a fitness sequence that invigorates the entire body. Yoga develops balance, muscular endurance, strength and awareness, flexibility, improved posture, agility, focused attention and grace.
