Teachers with a NYC Department of Education license as a physical education teacher (or any other academic content area teacher), valid AED/CPR and Concussion in Sports (CIS) certificates are eligible to become a CHAMPS teacher-coach. The school principal selects the teacher-coach and serves as the direct supervisor or rating officer.
A teacher-coach cannot begin a program without a current AED/CPR and Concussion in Sports (CIS) certificate valid through the end of the active season. Certificates are screened and approved by the Office of School Wellness Programs.
Nominated teacher-coach must have:
- Current AED/CPR (opens in a new browser window) certificate from the American Heart Association.
- Emergency Skills (opens in a new browser window) is a NYCPS vendor that offers free AED/CPR certification classes to all DOE employees. Note, ESI is the only NYCPS-contracted vendor for AED/CPR training.
- Contact Emergency Skills (opens in a new browser window) to register for a free in-person class. Classes are limited and scheduled on a rolling basis.
- In-person course takes 6 hours to complete.
- Office of School Wellness Programs does not accept online AED/CPR certificates.
- Current Concussion in Sports (opens in a new browser window) certificate from the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).
- NFHS: Concussion in Sports (opens in a new browser window) offers the free CDC-approved online course to all DOE employees.
- Access the NFHS: Concussion in Sports (opens in a new browser window) website and follow the course instructions.
- Online course takes 40 minutes to complete.
