Instruction in physical education is required in New York State for all students in grades K-12. Adapted Physical Education (APE) is specially designed instruction in activities, games, sports, and rhythms. It is adapted to meet the interests, abilities, and challenges of students with disabilities who may not safely or successfully engage in unrestricted activities of the general physical education program. Instruction is provided by certified physical education teacher. It is delivered in the least restrictive environment. In many cases, students should be provided with APE instruction in physical education class with their peers. Removing a student with disabilities from the general physical education class should only occur if the student's disability is such that instruction in the PE setting, even with the use of supplementary aids and services, cannot be done safely. Review the NYC Adapted Physical Education Guidance (opens in new tab) for more detailed information.

Requests for student assessment (opens in new tab) must be submitted by a member of the School Based Support Team or a school administrator.
