Schools must notify parents/legal guardians before their child receives HIV lessons in any grade and sexual health lessons in grades 6-12. Parents have the right to opt their child out of some sexual health and HIV lessons about birth control and HIV/sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention in middle school and high school. You can view and download Growing Up and Staying Safe: New York City K-12 HIV Education Curriculum (opens in new window), available on WeTeachNYC (opens in new window). You can find parent notification letters for both HIV and sexual health education and HIV Lesson Parent Overviews (lists the "opt out" prevention lessons) in multiple languages on the InfoHub (opens in new window; DOE login required).
